Nestled in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains near the Shenandoah Valley and close to Middleburg, Briar Patch Bed & Breakfast, our Virginia inn, offers charm and hospitality to match its historic location.  Once the site of a Civil War battle, Briar Patch is a historic farm (circa 1805) on 47 rolling acres with majestic mountain views.  We are located in Loudoun County, the heart of Virginia horse, antiques, and wine country on Route 50 (John Mosby Highway), 4 miles east of Middleburg.  Just 20 minutes from Dulles Airport and about an hour from Washington, DC – when you enter our world, you leave the stress behind.

Stay in one of our eight bedrooms in the main house or combine two rooms to create your own private suite.  For even more privacy, stay in our one bedroom cottage with a fully equipped kitchen.  Hold your wedding, family celebration, business meeting, group picnic, or off-site retreat in our indoor facility – The Fox Den at Briar Patch – for up to 200 guests or on our beautiful grounds.

Briar Patch is a great venue whether you are considering a romantic weekend getaway, experiencing one of our fun cooking class weekends, holding a wedding weekend surrounded by family and friends, hosting your favorite organization’s fundraiser, having a meeting in a unique location, or planning an anniversary or birthday party.
Explore the historic towns of Aldie, Middleburg, Purcellville, and Leesburg brimming with antique shops and fine dining.  Visit the many wineries dotting the countryside.  Explore Civil War battlefields or shop at a nearby outlet mall.  Sports enthusiasts will enjoy horseback riding at one of the local stables, playing tennis, golf, or other sports, hiking on mountain trails, or biking through the beautiful countryside.

Enjoy the many activities and events throughout the year, including horse events like steeplechase and point-to-point races, country fairs, garden and farm tours, arts and crafts shows, and the Christmas in Middleburg parade.  Take excursions to Washington, DC, Harpers Ferry, WV, or Shenandoah National Park.  This area satisfies diverse interests and lifestyles.

ABOUT OUR STAFF

Ellen Goldberg & Dan Haendel - owners

After spending over 20 years in the financial services industry, Ellen decided to make a career change by purchasing Briar Patch with her husband, Dan Haendel, and turning it into a bed & breakfast and event site. Undaunted by the fact that they knew nothing about the hospitality business, Ellen & Dan have wholeheartedly embraced it. They enjoy welcoming guests from all walks of life and seeing them delight in the beauty of this property.

Henriette Buell

Henriette has worked for Dan & Ellen for a number of years, and helped her obtain a hospitality degree.  She has worked in every aspect of the business and is now co-manager of Briar Patch.  She is knowledgable, a great organizer (an important trait for managing events), and has a pleasant personality.  She lives on the property in the little white house at the end of the driveway with her husband Alden (Buddy) Buell and their daughter Emma.

Jennifer Fries

Co-manager of Briar Patch, Jennifer graduated from Virginia Tech's hospitality program and has been co-manager for several years.  Jennifer is an amazing multi-tasker, cool under pressure (an important trait when managing events), and is a very sweet person.  In addition to running the day-to-day operations of Briar Patch, Jennifer & Henriette offer event coordination services (Cool Coordination) and can also prepare small meals (such as brunches, lunches for meetings, and small rehearsal dinners).

Susan Newlond

Susan is Briar Patch’s housekeeper extraordinaire. She is responsible for maintaining all eight bedrooms in the main house and the one-bedroom cottage, which is no small task. Of course, we bring in extra help as needed. Susan is thorough, loyal, and a very pleasant person.

Jamah (JP) Patterson

Everyone will recognize JP’s smiling face as he maintains The Fox Den at Briar Patch event building, works on keeping the grounds in shape,or helps direct parking. JP is also thorough, loyal, and has a very pleasant personality.

We all pride ourselves on going the extra mile to make your stay at Briar Patch enjoyable and memorable. Please don’t hesitate to ask us for our help. We welcome you with open arms!
